===== Information for Users ("READ-ME") ================
RMS-III: REFERENCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
RMS-III<TM> is a comprehensive, personal system for managing entry,
search, and report of bibliographic/reference data. It is an
annotated, menu driven system. It provides full data compatability
with dBASE III(R) type files. An overview is provided as SUMMARY.DOC,
which can be viewed prior to installation.
It requires a fully IBM compatiable system with at least 512kb of
available memory. Installation to a hard disk requires at least
1300 kb of free disk space. Hard disk installation is recommended
as is DOS Version 3.0 or higher. It can run (slowly) from a high
density floppy (760kb or greater), or from two 360kb floppy drives.
A disk-file manual is included as RMS-MAN.DOC which can be read on
the disk or printed with DOS print command. New info is in README_2
and WHATSNEW.DOC files.
Installation is required to adjust program configuration files and
to uncompress (unzip) several files so that they can be used.
These operations are done with an INSTALL program that must be run
from a default drive/directory (instructions follow). Once installed,
the best way to examine the program is to run it. The DEMO database
file and default choices will carry you through most of the program.
RMS-III is distributed in 'pre-licensed' (NSV) and 'shareware' forms,
the latter with a limited license (see following). Both are fully
operational and functionally identical in their main bibliographic/
reference operations. An 'UNLICENSED' note is displayed until a
license number is entered. Shareware users can obtain this number as
outlined in the ORDER.DOC & RMS-MAN.DOC files. Pre-licensed purchasers
will find this number along with a registration card (please mail).
Full licensing & registration is important: it assures that you can be
informed of corrections, up-dates, and availability of new publication
specific output style files and import/export options.
Also, registered users are entitled to support (by mail, fax or phone,
7-10pm EST) for a minimum of three months from date of registration.
In addition to the main biblio/reference operations of RMS-III, a
translation utility, TSX, is provided to full licensed users. It
integrates into RMS-III, extending the capability for import and
export of many other data formats (several ON-LINE source formats,
REFER and BibTeX structures, and user-defined formats). It may not
be needed by all users, but its availability assures high portability
of data you have entered. (For shareware users wanting to test the TSX
extension, a shareware-trial copy is available for $5{US}.)
The shareware products are intended for evaluation (90 days allowed
here) without charge. If you like RMS-III and wish to continue to
use it after the trial period, you are required to pay for a license
(see ORDER.DOC). Any fee you may have paid to others (disk vendors,
BBS's, etc.) to obtain this evaluation copy was a fee for their
services rather than a payment for continued use of the program.
Thank you for considering the RMS-III: Reference Management System.
A NOTE ABOUT SHAREWARE
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. It is an
alternate or supplement to pre-paid retail distribution. Copyright
laws apply in both cases and the copyright holder retains all rights.
For Shareware distribution, the copyright holder grants permission
to copy and distribute the software for TRIAL purposes, subject to
conditions stated in the documentation file. Registration numbers
are NOT to be shared. The product warranty is also stated in the
documentation files. (Services distributing software should notify
the author so that up-to-date versions can be supplied.)
If you use a Shareware program beyond initial evaluation, you must
license it for the prescribed fee. License/registration can provide
added benefits as stated above, and also provide basis for continued
development of the program. Most important, Shareware distribution
provides the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't like and
use the product, you don't pay for it!
This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-
related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly,
ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help to resolve a
dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical
support for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at
545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe message via
CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsmann 70007,3536.

===== Installation =====================================
RMS-III: REFERENCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM -- INSTALLATION
The installation procedure for RMS-III is quite simple. The package
includes a program, INSTALL.EXE, which automates the entire process.
You will need about 1200 Kb of available disk space on the hard drive
on which you plan to install RMS-III. Though not recommended, RMS-III
can be installed and run (slowly) from floppies. Floppy installation
requires four 360K diskettes, or two 720K diskettes, or one high
density diskette of either type.
The exact steps you need to take depend on how you received RMS-III.
INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
o Place RMS-III distribution diskette "Disk 1" in the appropriate
diskette drive and make that drive the default. For example,
using drive A:, type "A:" (without the quotes).
o Execute the INSTALL.EXE program on the distribution diskette.
For example, type the MS-DOS command, "install".
o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
You will have a chance to approve installation parameters. The
install program will suggest default destination directories,
and will copy the RMS-III files and data to those directories.
If desired, you may specify other directories. You can choose
a monitor type (it can be changed later) and whether or not to
install the documentation. The installation will make no other
changes; specifically, it will not modify your autoexec.bat or
config.sys files.
o While in the install program you will have a chance to view the
files README, WHATSNEW, and ORDER - these may contain additional
information and background.
INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE OR CD-ROM
If you received RMS-III in the form of archive file(s) (typical for
electronic downloading) you will need to perform the following steps.
From un-archived form (as on some CD-ROMs), you may skip the first step.
o For archived forms, extract the contents of the archive file(s)
into a temporary directory on your hard drive. The procedure for
doing this varies, depending on the form in which you received
the package. In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading
this text means that you already have the necessary tools and
knowledge. If not, you should be able to obtain directions for
this from the same source from which you received the package.
o Set the directory containing the RMS-III files as the default and
execute INSTALL.EXE. For example, if the directory containing the
RMS-III package (by extraction, or on CD-ROM) is D:\TEMPDIR, you
would execute the MS-DOS commands: "D:", "cd \tempdir", "install".
o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
You will have a chance to approve installation parameters. The
program will suggest default destination directories, and will
copy the RMS-III program and data files to those directories.
If desired, you may specify other directories. Install will
make no other changes; specifically, it will not modify your
autoexec.bat or config.sys files.
o While in the install program, you will have a chance to view the
files README, WHATSNEW, and ORDER - these may contain additional
information or background.
When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should
delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed RMS-III
(C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its contents.
YOU'RE READY TO GO
Once installed, the best way to examine the program is to run it.
From the RMS directory, type "RMS" to start the program. There are
DEMO database files included and the default choices will carry you
through most of the program. An initial menu item INFO provides a
summary and overview of the program.
More detailed information on operation of RMS-III can be found in
the file RMS-MAN.DOC, installed with the program. (This is an
abridged version of the typeset, illustrated manual.)
We hope you enjoy the program.
ps - An "UNLICENSED" note is displayed until a license number is
entered; it has no effect on the operation of the program.
Details are in the RMS-MAN.DOC & ORDER.DOC files. Pre-licensed
purchasers will find this number along with a registration
card (please mail). Registration is important: it assures
that you can be informed of new features, corrections, up-dates,
and availability of new publication-specific output style files
and import/export options. Also, registered users are entitled
to support (by mail, fax or phone, 7-10pm EST) for a minimum of
three months from date of registration.
(End of Installation Info)
===== MISCELLANEOUS NOTES =====
Additional information on limitations and recent changes can be found
in a README_2 file. A complete listing of version differences can be
found in a WHATSNEW.DOC file. Ordering information can be found in an
ORDER.DOC file (which outlines a shareware discount) as well as in the
VENDINFO.DIZ file. These files can all be read from within the INSTALL
program. A file SUMMARY.DOC provides more details of the program with-
out the need to install it.
NOTE that RMS-III can be found in several distribution forms which
should not be mixed or confused:
The shareware version can be distributed in one disk or two disk forms.
These are structured, respectively, for a single 3.5" 720kb or for two
5.25" 360kb disks. Accordingly, there are different compressed files
for these disk forms, and these can also serve other purposes:
RMS32D.ZIP or RMS32D0.ZIP is for 720kb or larger disks, and is often
used for BBS transmissions. RMS32D1.ZIP and RMS32D2.ZIP are for
360k disks and may be used where transmission size needs to be small.
Files RMS32D1.ZIP and RMS32D2.ZIP _must_ be used together to provide
all parts of the program,
BUT... RMS32D.ZIP (or RMS32D0.ZIP) is not part of that set - it is
a separate file which by itself contains all necessary parts of
the program.
The file SPLIT_FL.BAT can be used to gererate the two disk structure
from the one disk structure.
In addition to the shareware version, there may also be pre-registered,
non-shareware versions (NSV or LCR) of this program. These contain
more or less utilities and/or documentation/support and are priced
accordingly.

===== About VENDINFO Files =============================
Each VENDINFO.DIZ file contains extensive information about a product.
This "human-readable" section is followed by a compressed data record
useable by automated tools. The data record allows BBSes and other
distributors to automate package handling, and provides users with a
wealth of product information. VENDINFO tools (free viewer for users,
free or inexpensive processors for distributors, editors for authors)
are available from many sources, including the originators of VENDINFO:
